How it works
What is an air to air heat pump?
An air to air heat pump, often shortened to A2A, moves heat between the outside air and the rooms in your home. In winter it draws warmth from outside and delivers it indoors through wall-mounted or ducted units. In summer the cycle reverses, and the same units cool the room.
It is the same technology as air conditioning. The difference is that a modern air to air heat pump is designed and rated for heating as well as cooling, so it works as a year-round system rather than a summer luxury.
Unlike an air to water heat pump, an air to air system does not heat water or run radiators. It heats and cools the air directly, room by room, which makes it fast to respond and efficient to run.
Winter heating
A well-specified air to air system delivers three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity, at outdoor temperatures well below freezing. Rooms warm within minutes rather than hours.
Summer cooling
The same units cool and dehumidify. For homes in Cambridgeshire, where summers have become noticeably hotter, this is often the reason people call us first.
Room by room control
Each indoor unit is controlled independently. Heat the rooms you use, leave the rest, and stop paying to warm empty space.

A Clear, Structured Approach
From initial enquiry to ongoing support, we follow a defined process to ensure every renewable heating and energy system performs as it should.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does air to air qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Yes. Since April 2026 the scheme has included a £2,500 grant for air to air heat pumps in residential properties. Your existing fossil fuel boiler has to be fully removed or permanently decommissioned, you will need a separate hot water solution, and it is one grant per property. We handle the application.
Does it really heat as well as cool?
Yes. Modern air to air heat pumps are rated for heating at outdoor temperatures well below freezing, and are typically three to four times more efficient than electric panel heaters. Cooling is the same cycle in reverse.
How much does an air to air heat pump cost?
It depends on the number of rooms and the type of indoor unit. A single-room wall-mounted system can be done for a reasonably small amount while a multi-room or ducted system for a whole house is of course more. We give you a fixed quote after survey, with the £2,500 grant applied where you qualify.
Is it noisy?
Indoor units run at around 20 to 30 dB on low settings, quieter than a fridge. The outdoor unit is comparable to an air source heat pump and is sited away from bedrooms and neighbours.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not. Most domestic air conditioning and air to air installations fall under permitted development. There are exceptions for listed buildings and conservation areas, which we check at survey.
Can I have it in a flat or an extension?
Yes. Air to air is often the most practical option where there is no wet heating system to connect to, such as flats, annexes, garden offices and loft conversions.
Do you service systems you did not install?
Yes. Our engineers are F-Gas certified and service air to air and air conditioning systems from all major manufacturers across Cambridgeshire.
How long does installation take?
A single-room system is usually a day. Multi-room and ducted systems typically take two to three days.
