How it works
What is a Ground Source Heat Pump?
A ground source heat pump extracts naturally stored heat from the ground using buried pipework, and uses it to heat your home and hot water. Because ground temperatures remain stable year-round (typically 8–12°C in the UK), these systems deliver consistently high efficiency regardless of the weather above ground.
Most ground source systems produce 4 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity consumed, making them the most efficient form of heating available. They work with radiators, underfloor heating, or a combination of both.
Why Switch?
Benefits of a Ground Source Heat Pump
Highest efficiency available
Ground source heat pumps consistently outperform air source systems on efficiency because ground temperatures remain stable year-round.
Lowest running costs
Higher COP means lower electricity consumption per unit of heat. Ideal for replacing oil, LPG, or direct electric systems where savings are most significant.
Virtually silent
No outdoor fan unit. The compressor sits inside, and the ground loop is buried and silent. No noise considerations for neighbours.
Heating + hot water
One system handles your space heating and domestic hot water. Some systems can also provide passive cooling in summer.
Ground loop lasts 100+ years
The buried pipework is designed to outlast the building. Only the indoor heat pump unit needs replacing (typically every 20-25 years).
Lowest carbon footprint
The highest efficiency of any heating system means the lowest electricity use – and the lowest carbon emissions per unit of heat delivered.
