How it works
Retrofit, simply explained
A retrofit is the process of replacing your existing fossil fuel heating system with a low-carbon alternative, usually an air source or ground source heat pump. In most cases your existing radiators, pipework and hot water cylinder location can be reused or adapted, which keeps disruption to a minimum and the install cost down.
We’ve been retrofitting heat pumps into existing Cambridgeshire homes since 2011, from Victorian farmhouses to 1970s bungalows and modern detached properties. Each system is designed around your property, not from a template.
Whatever you're switching from, we've got you covered
Switching from gas
You’re not facing the same pricing pressure as oil and LPG users, but you might be future-proofing. Gas boilers are a fossil fuel system; they will continue to be supported, but the policy direction is clear.
Some homeowners switch now to lock in their grant funding, reduce carbon, and get ahead of any future regulation on gas heating.
- £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant available now for gas homes switching to a heat pump.
Switching from oil
You’re paying delivery prices that swing with global markets (we’re sure you’ve felt that recently). Most oil users see the largest running cost reduction when they switch to a heat pump, because they’re starting from the most expensive baseline.
Your oil tank can stay or be removed; it’s your call. We handle the boiler decommissioning either way.
- £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant available now for oil-heated homes.
Switching from LPG
LPG users face the same issues as oil heating: delivery dependency, exposure to wholesale prices, limited supplier options. Heat pumps remove the delivery requirement and run on a fuel source that’s becoming more stable each year.
Cylinders or tanks can be removed during the install. We coordinate with your supplier on collection.
- £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant available now for LPG-heated homes.
Why Eco Installer
Designed for your home, installed by our own team
Designed around your property
Full heat loss calculation, room-by-room emitter check, and system sizing tailored to your home. No templates.
Works with your existing setup
In most cases your radiators and pipework can be reused. Where upgrades are needed we recommend only what’s necessary.
Performs in UK winters
Modern systems run efficiently down to minus 20 degrees. UK winters are well within range.
No deliveries, no tanks
Your heat comes from the air or ground around your property. No more oil deliveries, LPG bottles, or gas dependency.
Grant funding handled
We process your Boiler Upgrade Scheme application as part of the install. The grant is applied directly to your invoice.
Local team, fully accountable
Designed, installed, and serviced by our own engineers. Cambridgeshire-based since 2011.
Our Process
A Clear, Structured Approach
From initial enquiry to ongoing support, we follow a defined process to ensure every renewable heating and energy system performs as it should.
1. Initial Consultation
We begin with a detailed discussion about your property, existing systems and long-term goals. This helps us assess suitability, funding options and the right combination of heating and energy solutions.
2. Survey & System Design
We carry out full assessments including heat loss calculations, emitter checks and electrical considerations where required. Your system is then carefully designed to suit your property and usage.
3. Installation
Our experienced team installs and commissions your heat pump, solar or supporting upgrades to high standards, ensuring everything operates safely and efficiently from day one.
4. Handover & Ongoing Support
We guide you through your new system, optimise performance settings and provide servicing and long-term support to protect your investment.
The Practical Details
What happens to your old system
The question most customers ask after the first phone call.
Oil
If you currently have an oil boiler
We disconnect and remove the boiler as part of the install. Your oil tank can stay (some customers keep it for an outbuilding or as a backup) or be removed by us at the same time. Any residual oil is responsibly disposed of.
LPG
If you currently have LPG heating
Cylinders return to your LPG supplier as standard. Bulk tanks are coordinated with your supplier for removal. We handle the boiler removal and pipework disconnection as part of the install.
Gas
If you currently have a gas boiler
We disconnect the gas supply at the boiler and cap it safely. Your gas connection to the property remains unless you specifically want it removed. Cooker hobs and other gas appliances continue to work as normal.
Hot water cylinder placement
Most heat pump installs require a hot water cylinder. In existing properties this typically goes where your old cylinder sat, often in the airing cupboard. We assess space during the survey and recommend the best location for your home.
What you could save
Running cost comparison
Indicative annual heating costs for a typical three-bedroom detached property in Cambridgeshire.
| Currently heating with | Current annual cost | Heat pump (smart tariff) | Indicative annual saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil | £2,000–£3,200 | £700–£1,200 | £1,300–£2,000 |
| LPG | £2,400–£3,800 | £700–£1,200 | £1,700–£2,600 |
| Mains gas | £1,100–£1,800 | £700–£1,200 | £400–£600 |

£
Boiler Upgrade Scheme
£9,000 toward your retrofit, available now.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides £9,000 toward an air source or ground source heat pump for homes currently heated by oil or LPG, the enhanced rate for off-gas-grid properties. Homes on mains gas qualify for the standard £7,500 grant. Either way, we handle the application as part of your install and apply the funding directly to your invoice.
The higher £9,000 rate runs until March 2027. Demand is high while it is open, so booking your survey now gives you the most control over your install date.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I need to replace my radiators?
Not always. Around 70% of properties we retrofit can keep most of their existing radiators. During the survey we measure heat loss room by room and check whether your existing emitters are correctly sized. Where upgrades are needed, we recommend the minimum that delivers the performance you need.
What happens to my old oil tank?
It’s your call, some customers keep it for an outbuilding or as a backup; others want it removed. We can arrange removal as part of the install. If you keep it, we ensure it’s safely isolated from your heating system.
How long does a retrofit installation take?
Most residential retrofits are completed within three to five days, depending on system size and any associated works such as cylinder relocation or radiator upgrades.
Will my home actually stay warm in winter?
Yes, when the system is correctly designed. Modern heat pumps run efficiently down to minus 20 degrees, well within UK conditions. Comfort depends on the design, not the technology, which is why our survey includes full heat loss calculation rather than rule-of-thumb sizing.
Where does the hot water cylinder go?
In most retrofits it sits where your old cylinder sat, typically in the airing cupboard. If your current setup uses a combi boiler with no cylinder, we identify the best location during the survey, often a utility room or under-stairs cupboard.
What's the difference between an air source and ground source heat pump?
Air source heat pumps are the most common retrofit option: lower install cost, suitable for most properties, external unit needed. Ground source heat pumps offer higher efficiency and lower running costs but require land for the ground array (either trenches or boreholes), which makes them better suited to rural properties with space. We assess suitability during the survey.
How disruptive is the installation?
Less than most customers expect. Most retrofits involve a few days of work, mostly outside or in the plant room. Heating is usually offline for one to two days during changeover. We work around school runs, work-from-home schedules, and pet care. Just let us know what you need.
