How it works

Daylight turned into savings

Solar panels convert daylight into electricity you can use at home straight away, store for later, or sell back to the grid.

Panels capture daylight on your roof

Photovoltaic (PV) cells in each panel absorb sunlight and convert it into DC electricity throughout the day, not just when the sun is out in full.

An inverter converts it for use in your home

A solar inverter transforms that DC electricity into AC current, which is the type your lights, appliances, and sockets all run on.

You use it, store it, or export it

Power your home directly, charge a battery for later, heat your water via a solar diverter, or export surplus back to the grid and earn payments through the Smart Export Guarantee.

Why go solar?

Six reasons homeowners and businesses love them

1

Better for the environment

Every unit of electricity you generate from the sun is one less unit produced from fossil fuels. It is one of the simplest and most effective steps you can take to reduce your household carbon footprint.

2

Earn from your surplus

Export unused electricity through the Smart Export Guarantee and receive payments for every kWh you send back to the grid. It is genuinely a win-win.

3

Heat your water for free

A solar diverter such as an iBoost or Eddi uses excess solar energy to heat your hot water instead of wasting it. You will have hot water for most of the year with only minimal backup from your boiler on the coldest days.

4

Lower electricity bills

Sunlight is free, and every unit you generate yourself is one you do not have to buy from the grid. Most households notice a real difference from the very first month.

5

Very low maintenance

A well-installed solar system can last 25 years or more with minimal upkeep. No fuel, no moving parts, no fuss.

Payback and Savings

Indicative system and savings

Based on current UK energy rates of 24–27p per kWh (Ofgem Q2 2026).

System size Panels approx. Typical home Annual saving* Payback
3.8 kW 10 Smaller homes £700–£1,000 8–11 years
6 kW 15 Mid-size homes £1,000–£1,400 7–9 years
8 kW 20 Larger homes £1,300–£1,800 6–8 years

*Indicative figures will vary depending on your roof orientation, pitch, shading, household usage, and energy tariff. Savings include both reduced grid consumption and Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) income. Adding battery storage can increase savings further and shorten payback by 1–2 years. The installation is very neat looking, and all achieved with a minimum of fuss or inconvenience. My biggest praise for the company would be their communications. If they said it was going to happen - it happened, and at the timescale provided.

My parents heat pump system gave up just as the weather turned cold. Big eye watering job, but needed replacing ASAP. Turnaround time couldn't have been quicker, the engineers who did the install were all sound and did a tidy professional job. I'm still blown away by the lagging.. (there wasn't any before) it is artwork😁👌 cheers Eco installer and service ltd.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will solar panels work on my roof?

Most roofs are suitable. South-facing roofs generate the most, but east and west-facing roofs still produce well across the day. During the survey we assess your roof’s orientation, pitch, shading and structure, then design a system to match.

It depends on your roof, the size of the system and how much electricity you use during the day. Rather than quote a generic figure, we model your expected generation and savings for your specific property as part of your free estimate.

There is no universal grant covering solar for most homeowners. However, domestic solar and battery installations are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, which everyone benefits from, and you can earn export income through the Smart Export Guarantee. Some households may qualify for means-tested funding, and we are happy to point you in the right direction.

Yes. Panels generate electricity from daylight rather than direct sunshine, so they keep producing on overcast days. Output is naturally lower in winter and higher across the longer days of summer.

Yes, through the Smart Export Guarantee. Your energy supplier pays you for the surplus you export. Rates vary between suppliers, so it is worth choosing one with a competitive export tariff, and we can advise on this.

No, solar works without one. A battery lets you store daytime generation to use in the evening, increasing how much of your own power you use and reducing what you buy from the grid. You can read more on our Solar Batteries page.

Solar works well alongside a heat pump and can offset some of the electricity it uses, particularly across spring, summer and autumn. As we install both, we can design them to work together as part of a low-carbon home.

Most domestic solar installations fall under permitted development and do not need planning permission, though listed buildings and conservation areas can differ. A typical installation takes one to two days, and we keep disruption to a minimum.
