Blog: Heat pump questions and answers

How much does it cost to have a heat pump installed?

We have added our budgetary heat pump costs to our website to give an idea of costs, please click here to view. With all our project, we do heatloss calculations to confirm the heating requirements of the property, once we have done this, we can give you your bespoke quotation.

What type of property is a heat pump suitable for?

Heat pumps can be installed in both new build and existing properties. With an existing property, there needs to be no recommendations on the energy performance certificate for cavity or loft installation to be eligible for the boiler upgrade scheme.

How long does a typical heat pump installation take?

For a straight forward installation of just a heat pump and cylinder (plant room only installation) we would be looking at 5 days. When replacing radiators too, we would be looking at 10 days, which includes the removal of the existing system, installation of the new system and commissioning.

When a heat pump is being installed, is there much mess or disruptions?

We always try to keep mess and disruptions to a minimum. If you are working from home while we do the installation, please do let us know and we’ll do our best to keep noise levels down. On several occasions, we have carried out the installation while the homeowner was on holiday, but we are happy to work around your requirements. At the end of each day, our team will tidy up any mess they have created, and on completion of our works we will ensure your home is as we found it.

What funding is available for the installation of heat pumps?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is available for self-builders for new build properties, and for homeowners who are replacing an existing traditional boiler. The heat pump must both provide heating and hot water. Through the BUS, you can receive £5,000 towards an air source heat pump installation, or £6,000 towards the installation of a ground source heat pump. We have installed over 60 projects to date (16.06.23) through the BUS, the scheme is installer led, meaning that we do the majority of the administration on your behalf. For more information on the BUS, please click here.

For an existing property, do radiators need to be replaced?

When we do the heat loss calculations, we will provide a radiator schedule showing any shortfalls. If the radiators do not meet the heatloss requirements, they will need to be replaced in line with MCS requirements.

Can I see a working heat pump in action?

Yes! We have a showroom in Witchford, Ely. You are welcome to make an appointment to see and heat our heat pumps in action and also see the type of cylinder and accessories which you might have in your house.
