Government Funding and Grants

Government Funding and Grants for Renewable Energy

If you are considering installing a renewable energy system, such as a heat pump or solar photovoltaic (PV) system, you may be wondering what government funding and incentives are available to help offset the costs. You might have already researched it, but become overwhelmed by all the options…you wouldn’t be the first person to feel this way. It can be a minefield.

At Eco Installer, we guide our customers through every stage from installation to securing funding, making the process stress-free and straightforward. We can even help you make the initial decision as to which option is right for your home.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides up to £7,500 towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. This is a whopping saving! Whilst this may not cover the full cost, it is still a significant contribution towards making your home more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, which is why many of our customers choose it. Why waste such a fantastic opportunity to live a greener future?

Who is eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

You may qualify for the BUS if you:

  • Are replacing a fossil fuel heating system, such as oil, gas, electric, or LPG.
  • Own the property you are applying for (this includes businesses, second homes, and rental properties).
  • Are building your own home (self-builder)

For existing properties, an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is required as part of the application. But don’t panic if you don’t already have one, as we can connect you with a trusted local EPC assessor.

How to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The BUS is installer-led, meaning Eco Installer will apply on your behalf. Often when something sounds too good to be true, it is…but not always and certainly not when it comes to this! Once your installation is confirmed, we submit the application to Ofgem, following which, you will receive a reply asking you to consent to our application. After installation, Eco Installer redeems the funding directly from the scheme, keeping the process simple for you.

Note: If you are a self-builder, additional documents are required to confirm your project is a genuine self-build (and not a developer project). We will help ensure all paperwork is in order.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) – Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

If you are installing solar panels, you could benefit from the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This is a government-backed initiative that rewards you for the electricity you export back to the grid. Each Solar Assisted Heat Pumps energy supplier offers its own SEG tariff, so it is important to know that rates will vary. We recommend contacting your energy company to learn more about their specific tariffs and rates.

How to apply for the Smart Export Guarantee

After your solar PV system is installed, Eco Installer will provide you with:

  • DNO Approval (Distribution Network Operator confirmation)
  • MCS Certificate (Microgeneration Certification Scheme)

You will need to forward these documents to your energy company when applying for the SEG tariff.

Why Choose Eco Installer?

To qualify for both BUS and SEG funding, your installation must be completed by an MCS-certified installer, such as us. Eco Installer has been MCS certified since 2013, and since the BUS scheme began to 2025 we have completed over 80 installations funded through the programme.

At risk of blowing our own trumpet, we combine expert installation, award-winning customer service, and comprehensive funding support, ensuring the process is simple and rewarding. Why not take a look at our case studies, which feature customers who have firsthand experience with choosing us.
